December 2009
Dear friends,
Happy National Pear Month from the bountiful Pacific Northwest! This has been a truly fruitful year for us, the sweet and juicy pears of the the USA Pear family, and we’re happy to report that 2009 was full of exciting events and activities.
Our babies, Seckel and Forelle, have really come into their own in 2009. They’re small in size, but still packing every bit the pearsonality of their bigger siblings. With Seckel’s bite-size charm and Forelle’s natural red freckles, these babies are a favorite for everyone from pre-school kids to gourmands. This pair got really into Halloween this year – you should have seen their costumes!
The twins, Green Anjou and Red Anjou, are at the top of their class, which is really saying something as the size of the Anjou crop in 2009 is the largest on record. Of course they made the honor roll this year, and as a reward, they got to follow the popular rock band Honor Society all around the country.
USA Pears are an official sponsor of Honor Society, who wrote special tribute songs just for us, like “Tastes Like PEARadise” and “Snackin’ on a Pear.” We don’t like to brag (much), but Honor Society’s fans are now big, big fans of USA Pears, too. Fans recognize us at the grocery store, and they even invite us to come home with them. We love the attention! Our fans post photos of us on their Facebook pages and Twitter updates. Plus, they make YouTube videos of their own with pear choreography that puts Dancing with the Stars to shame.
Comice and Starkrimson are our showstoppers! Their modeling careers are taking off, and they have been in high demand by top food photographers. They’ve even posed with other famous names in the industry… not that we like to name-drop, but they’ve been paired with some renowned ingredients like fine cheeses, poultry, nuts, exotic spices, leafy greens, and more. We sure hope the fame doesn’t go to their necks… their adoring fans will feel the difference when they “Check the Neck” for ripeness!
Bartlett and Red Bartlett are the foodies of the family. This year they’ve spent quite a bit of time in the kitchens of top restaurants, rubbing shoulders with some big name chefs. Along with the rest of our family, they continue to appear on menus for every course of every meal of the day. Next up, we’re vying for a guest spot on Iron Chef…keep your fingers crossed!
Bosc and Concorde had the esteemed honor of accepting the USDA’s proclamation of December as National Pear Month on behalf of all USA Pears. December is the heart of fresh pear season, and we think there’s no better time to put pears on the pedestal we deserve. Expect to see us in mouthwatering recipes, beautiful home décor projects, and even in festive cocktails during this special month and throughout pear season.
As we reflect on the past year, we’re reminded of what is important in life and what makes us flourish as a family: warm days and cool nights, abundant sunlight, moisture from glacial snowmelt, and nutrient-rich volcanic soil. We hope this holiday greeting finds you as healthy as we are, and we thank the many generations of Washington and Oregon pear growers who make all of our dreams come true year after year.
Happy National Pear Month, from our family to yours!
